Since 1991, Lithuania has been observing January 13th – Freedom Defenders’ Day. To commemorate it this year, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society is organizing an evening of symphonic music featuring contemporary composers from the three Baltic States – Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Estonian Maestro Erki Pehk, with violinist Dalia Kuznecovaitė as the soloist. The program opens with Estonian composer Ülo Krigul’s Violin Concerto, a colorful and dynamic musical canvas dedicated to the Lithuanian violinist. It is followed by the world premiere of Lithuanian composer Arvydas Malcys’ symphony Vakarykštis pasaulis (The World of Yesterday), contemplating the turmoil of our times, and the Violin Concerto Tālā gaisma (Distant Light) by one of the most prominent Latvian composers, Pēteris Vasks, who, incidentally, studied the double bass at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. Composed in 1997, this opus is dedicated to Vasks’ friend and study mate, violinist Gidon Kremer.
